THE MADS NØRGAARD MINIGUIDE TO THE MONTH OF JULY

THE MADS NØRGAARD MINIGUIDE TO THE MONTH OF JULY

These days it seems like everyone is away on summer holiday. If you’re not one of them, don’t be gloomy. Instead you should enjoy the empty streets in your neighborhood, that you’re able to get the coveted, sun kissed table at your favorite restaurant and the fact that you’re off the clock in the world’s greatest city. Here’s our five favorites for July. Enjoy.

Treasure Island
Speaking of elbow room. On the dark side of Central Copenhagen, in the bustling Refshaleøen, there’s a new place to get your fix of natural wine. The name is Naturs and it’s the latest addition to the former shipyard’s second coming as a Copenhagen hot-spot. The tiny wine shack is just a stones throw away from another of our favorites; the unparalleled La Banchina. This entire area has grown to be the antithesis to the busy streets right opposite of the harbour. And it’s now well worth the bike or boat ride for multiple reasons.

New Kid on the Block
There’s new life breathing in the hallowed culinary halls that formerly housed Noma. Restaurant Barr is spearheaded by famed chef Thorsten Schmidt and boasts what you could call Old Nordic cooking set in a modern atmosphere. Oh, and a loads of craft beer on tap to wash down your meat balls. Behind the concept is Rene Redzepi and the rest of the power squad behind Noma. The interior design by Norwegian architecture powerhouse Snøhetta is the icing on this delicious cake.

Pièce de Résistance
Cross the inner harbour bridge to Nyhavn and find your way to Kunsthal Charlottenborg. As you may have noticed, the imposing facade of this monumental baroque building is often included as an additional exhibition space towards the bypassing world. And on show right now is Ai Weiwei and his powerfull, yet brilliant installation art piece, Soleil Levant. Political as always, Weiwei has barricaded all the windows with more than 3.500 life jackets salvaged from the Greek island of Lesbos where many of the boat refugees arrive. The eye-opening art work is made in commemoration of World Refugee Day.

Seconds, Please
The revolution is still on. We’re of course talking about burgers; great ones, juicy ones, but never enough of them. At least until now. If you don’t live under a rock, you know that the best of the best in burgers are made in a former gas station in central Copenhagen. Now their long awaited second store front has arrived. Not far from the original Gasoline Grill, in the shadow of Strøget, there’s now another chance to feast on beef and cheese goodness.

A Club to Join
There’s long been far and few between a decent butter chicken or daal in our fair capital. Until now, the selection of good places has amounted to Bollyfood in Kødbyen and a few local recommendations here and there. Now our prayers have been answered by Curry Club in Christianhavn. The small Indian joint has a simple menu of five different curry’s with rice for a flat fee of 99 kr. No hocus-pocus. Only a couple of months old, Curry Club already has quite the local following, and we are next in line to redeem membership to the club.
